Why walls change everything
On an ordinary country lane there is a verge. A vehicle can put two wheels onto it, a tractor can squeeze past, and nobody has to reverse. A dry stone wall gives you none of that.
So Dales lanes are planned around passing places rather than width, and the question is not "will it fit" but "where do we go if something comes the other way".
Gates, grids and fords
A mile of farm track with a gate at each end is entirely normal here, and so is a cattle grid, an unfenced moor road with sheep on it, and in a few places a ford.
None of these stops a move. All of them need knowing about, because they change the vehicle and sometimes the crew size.
- Count the gates and say whether they are yours to open.
- Note the track surface and what it is like after rain, not in settled weather.
- Check turning space at the property — getting out matters more than getting in.
- Flag any cattle grid with a weight limit, and any ford at all.
The banks that are simply out
Sutton Bank carries a prohibition on HGVs and caravans and is signed and enforced. Rosedale Chimney is one of the steepest public roads in England and is unsuitable for a loaded vehicle either way. Park Rash and Buttertubs are both poor ideas loaded.
This is why a North Yorkshire move is sometimes routed a long way round. A route that looks direct across a map may not be available to a removal vehicle at all, and the time to establish that is at the quote.
What a shuttle actually involves
Where the lane genuinely will not take a full-size vehicle, we stage at the nearest hard standing and bring the load in with a smaller one. It adds handling and it is completely routine in this county.
Planned, it is a line on the quote. Discovered at the bottom of a track, it is a bad day for everyone.
