One county, and it is a large one
North Yorkshire is the biggest county in England and it contains four or five genuinely different places. A firm that treats it as one area will be wrong about most of them.
Why height, and not districts
Most county removal sites divide themselves by district council, which is tidy and tells you nothing. A district boundary has never once affected whether a vehicle can reach a house.
Height does. It decides the gradient, whether a bank is signed against us, whether the road has snow gates, whether the lane is walled, and — because the national parks sit on the high ground — whether there is a designation on top of the geography.
A Whitby cliff cottage at sea level, a Harrogate villa at a hundred and twenty metres and a Rosedale farmhouse on the moor top are three different operations. Organising the site that way is simply honest about it.
What we know that a national operator does not
Which banks are signed against a removal vehicle, which passes are a poor idea loaded, which villages cannot be turned in during the season, how many steps there are at Robin Hood’s Bay, and that you cannot bracket a lift against a listed façade without consent.
None of that is glamorous. All of it is the difference between a day that runs and a day that does not.
What we say no to
Roads we are signed off, and weather we should not take a high-sided vehicle onto the tops in. If the snow gates are shut, we move the date and tell you why.
That is occasionally annoying on the day. It has never once been the wrong call.
How we would like to be judged
On whether the vehicle that arrived was right for the lane, whether the route was planned before the morning, whether anything was broken, and whether anybody had to be told something on the day that should have been established at the survey.
Tell us where you are on the hill
Both addresses, roughly how much there is, and — if it is up a dale, on the moors or down a cliff — how the last stretch actually works. That is what decides the vehicle.
