Rising ground on the edge of the Dales, and the part of the county with the most listed façades, conservation areas and large Victorian houses per square mile.
What this height does to a move
The gradients here are real but manageable — Knaresborough in particular drops steeply to the Nidd, and several Harrogate streets are steeper than they look on a map.
The genuine constraint is regulatory rather than physical. Large parts of Harrogate and almost all of central Ripon and Knaresborough sit in conservation areas, and a great many of the big villas are listed.
That matters for one specific thing: you cannot bracket an external furniture lift against a listed façade without consent, and on some streets you cannot get a vehicle close enough to use one anyway. It is worth knowing before it becomes the plan.
The properties up here
Very large Victorian and Edwardian villas with basements, half-landings and original staircases that turn twice; stone terraced crescents; and converted flats inside what were single houses, where the communal stair is the whole problem.
