The highest ground and the steepest public roads in England. This is the only band where the road itself can rule out a vehicle entirely.
What this height does to a move
Rosedale Chimney Bank is one of the steepest public roads in England and is unsuitable for a loaded removal vehicle in either direction. Sutton Bank, on the western escarpment, carries a long-standing prohibition on HGVs and caravans. These are not cautions — they are the reason a move is routed the way it is.
So moor addresses are frequently reached the long way round, up a dale from the north or in from Pickering rather than over the top. A route that looks direct on a map may simply not be available to us.
Winter closes the tops. Snow gates on the moor roads are there for a reason and they are used. If conditions are marginal we move the date rather than the load, and we would rather tell you that at the quote than on the morning.
The properties up here
Long low moorland farmhouses, estate cottages, and a good number of converted chapels and schoolhouses. Roofs are pantile or stone slab, walls are thick, and heating is oil or solid fuel far more often than mains gas.
